This was a real departure for me. This drawing is nearly entirely hand-made - the only difference between the version you see here and the physical drawing is the digitally-inserted gray background tone.
The source material for this was a New Yorker article about soldiers in Iraq - John Hendrix asked us to create an illustration for it for our final project. The actual drawing is on 18x24 in Bristol board, and was done in ink with pens and brushes. Unlike most of my work, I skipped thumbnailing and went right to a final pencil sketch, then inked directly on that sketch.
