Gaia

This week's ChoW was Gaia, the ancient Greek personification of the Earth and nature.

Full image and process breakdown after the jump.

In Greek vase painting, Gaia is depicted as a woman emerging from the ground. In later Roman mosaics, she appears reclining on the earth. I wanted to have a little of both.

I settled on the blue-green palette pretty quickly - it seemed an obvious choice. I did a bit more rendering than I'm completely comfortable with - usually I try to pull back the shadows and highlights to a bare minimum and let the line and value do most of the work.

  1. Very solid. I really dig the use of trees and the valley on he lower right of the frame to emphasize it.

  2. Thinking. It's always the same thing. To think is to go crazy.
